COBBLESTONE CLOTHING CO.
CONTEMPORARY STYLES YOU'LL ALWAYS RETURN TO

Cobblestone has been a family institution since Tompkins opened the store in 1987, which is located on Last Chance Gulch.

When Tompkins was told her business idea wouldn’t work and was turned down for a $10,000 loan — subsequently telling the male banker with a bad suit, horrible tie, and worse shoes that he simply “wouldn’t understand” — she turned to her mother, Harriet Rogers, for help.

Rogers, whom both Liska and Tompkins describe as a fashion matriarch for the family, loaned her daughter the money to begin the store and then became a bookkeeper for 17 years. The sharp-dressed and independent Rogers was a daring Montana ranch girl, flying an airplane solo at age 18 and working at a number of businesses to support her family.

Tompkins opened the store when her daughter Kym was in high school, and the granddaughter in the trio began going to market with her mother.

“I came back in ’93 and started really going to market; I’ve been doing the buying for 12 years,” she said.
Kym Liska, the daughter of founder Cheri Tompkins and a longtime employee, officially took over the women’s clothing store in 2012.

Liska has added her vision and updated some of the product lines — AG denim, Repeat Cashmere, Sanctuary, Liverpool, Korkease boots — but keeps the style of the store intact.

“My icon is Ralph Lauren,” Liska said. “Always traditional and classic with an updated flair.”

That’s why customers have continued to come back to the store, which offers a more sophisticated style than can be found in many of the box stores.
“There are loyal customers that come in and if I’m not here, they come back later. It's so sweet to be loved by our community in such a big way,” she said.

With a demographic that ranges from young women picking out jeans to the 45-and-over crowd, Liska knows her products can match nearly anyone’s tastes.
